Physical activity as therapy for anxiety and depression

Session Type:
We know that people with mental illness have significantly poorer health outcomes and life expectancy than the general population. Current empirical research is confirming what we have known in our industry for many years: exercise can help reduce the symptoms of depression and anxiety, as well as other mental health challenges.

People who don’t exercise are 75% more likely to be diagnosed with depression later in life.
But what does that all mean to you as a fitness professional? How can you ‘prescribe’ exercise to support a person’s mental health? How much? What and how often? Come along to this interactive session to understand how important your work is to your client’s whole-person health!

Learning Outcomes:
• Understand where physical health intersects with mental health, how your influence can play a key role, and what your responsibilities are.
• Learn about the protective effects of exercise that might mean some clients avoid episodes of depression and anxiety who might otherwise have to manage that clinical diagnosis.
• Really get a feel for what a life navigating depression and / or anxiety might feel like for your clients and how you might have to change the way you work to get better outcomes.
