When we are guiding someone on their physical activity journey, we need to understand that this person is choosing to change their behaviour. Changing behaviour is hard and our clients maybe resistant to change for many different reasons. In this session we will look at what happens inside our clients heads to learn why that change is so hard. By understanding that the brain and body are interconnected we can understand that when we train the body, we’re also training the brain. So while you may know that a certain tissue element provides the drive for that exercise skill, you also need to be aware of what is happening inside the operating system in control of the output of that skill performance.

This is the session that anyone working with weight loss or muscle gain needs to attend. Body composition is one of the top goals of clients. What they don't often realise is that the major elements standing in their way of a great result are how their hormones interact with the energy they are burning and consuming. They also don't realise that we all have different levels of hormones and this dramatically influences your ability to change your body, it's shape and overall wellbeing. This session will help you see how fitness, food and sleep have a dramatically different influence on body composition change. Calories are important, but this session will allow you to understand them in a new and essentially different way. Plus, it will go beyond body composition, into how people can understand and make the most of the body that they have, rather than feel like they are in a constant fight with it.

Did you know there is a powerful system in your body that can literally shot down your ability to move effectively or learn? Both exercise and learning have substantial energy requirements, and your brain needs to ‘budget’ for this. It sits in the darkness of your cranium, so it has to use its messengers to know what’s happening out there in your body. Whether you get to exercise well, or badly, is dependent on these messengers returning with good news. JP is here to open up this whole system for you to understand, give you the coaches check list to gauge someone’s current state, then give you the knowledge to help boost exercise outcomes through integrated practices and movement. Sound good? Well, you’d be wrong, because it’s absolutely GREAT!

This session draws on research conducted in 2022 (soon to be published) at Deakin University exploring the behavioural and psychosocial mechanisms that may play a part in the PA – depression relationship.

Have we made exercise boring? JP is wondering if we, the industry built around helping people move better and be more healthy, have strangled the very creature we’re trying to nourish.
