Dr. Matt Brughelli is an Associate Professor at Auckland University of Technology (AUT), where he focuses on sports biomechanics and sports technology. His research primarily explores the biomechanics of sprinting and jumping, eccentric strength training, force-velocity profiling, and injury prevention. He has published over 75 journal articles with over 4500 citations.
One of his main areas of interest is eccentric strength training. Eccentric contractions are known to generate greater force than concentric contractions, and his research examines how individuals can leverage this for enhancing strength, power and functional movement. This type of training also has applications for rehabilitation and injury prevention.
Dr. Brughelli has also made contributions in the literature on force-velocity profiling during jumping and sprinting, a method that assesses the balance between an athlete’s ability to produce force and their speed of movement. By using force-velocity profiling, coaches can develop more individualized training programs that target specific performance needs.
Dr. Brughelli’s research also touches on injury prevention, particularly how biomechanical imbalances can contribute to increased injury risk.
At AUT, Dr. Brughelli teaches sports biomechanics and strength and conditioning to undergraduate and postgraduate university students.
