More Than Just the Shakes: Exercise Strategies for Parkinson’s Disease

Session Type: | |
As our population ages, more clients are presenting with neurological conditions – and Parkinson’s Disease is on the rise globally. While tremors are the most recognised symptom, Parkinson’s involves a much broader range of physical and cognitive challenges. Exercise professionals are in a unique position to support quality of life for those affected, but only with the right knowledge and tools.

This session explores the lesser-known symptoms of Parkinson’s Disease, key contraindications, and the significant impact exercise can have on function and wellbeing. You’ll gain insight into the Parkinson’s triad, learn how to tailor programming based on individual presentations, and uncover a specific, underused exercise approach that can dramatically reduce symptoms and improve daily life.

Learning Outcomes:
– Identify common (and less obvious) symptoms of Parkinson’s Disease
– Understand the current prevalence and rising rates of Parkinson’s globally
– Recognise risk factors that may contribute to Parkinson’s onset
– Learn how to apply the Parkinson’s triad when assessing and programming
– Gain programming strategies and discover the most effective, yet often overlooked, exercise modalities for symptom reduction
